Eisteddfod Eryri 2012

The people of Eryri invite
Eisteddfod yr Urdd to the county in 2012

The hall of Ysgol Dyffryn Nanlle, Penygroes was full to its brim when the Urdd National Eisteddfod Urdd Gobaith Cymru was unanimously invited to the Eryri region in 2012. This will be the Urdd Eisteddfod’s eighth visit to the area, with its first visit being in 1930 in Caernarfon, and this was the second ever Urdd National Eisteddfod. The last visit was in 1998 in Llyn and Eifionydd, which was a tremendously successful Eisteddfod, and the Urdd is very much looking forward to returning to Eryri in 2012.

The Urdd Regional Committee of Eryri had previously discussed the matter, and were very keen for the Eisteddfod to return. Furthermore, Gwynedd Council had also expressed their support.

Aled Sion, Director of the Eisteddfod and Arts, Urdd Gobaith Cymru commented:

“Urdd and Council volunteers have already shown their support and commitment to the festival, and the Urdd is extremely pleased with the reaction of the local people to invite the Eisteddfod to Eryri in 2012. There is a tremendous amount of enthusiasm and energy amongst the youngsters and local volunteers, and we’re faithful that they will work relentlessly to secure an Eisteddfod to remember.”

No official decision has been made yet as to the exact location of the festival site. Following patterns from previous years, the Urdd will invite local people, landownders and areas to suggest suitable sites to be considered for the Eisteddfod Maes.

Aled Siôn added:

“Obtaining a good location is key to the success of any Eisteddfod. A good site is made up of several contributing factors, and we’re keen to hear from the local inhabitants, and would encourage them to offer locations for the Eisteddfod field.”

Dyfed Edwards, the Leader of Gwynedd Council, expressed his support from the beginning. He said:

“The Council is very pleased that the Eisteddfod will be returning to Gwynedd and to the Urdd region of Eryri. We’re looking forward to working together, and are confident that we will have a special Eisteddfod. The recent agreement between the Urdd and the Welsh Local Govenrment Association, which secures yearly contributions from all local authorites, is a big step forward, and will ensure a way for the Urdd and Councils to plan for the future.”

Tudur Dylan Jones, Chairman of the Eisteddfod and Arts Committee, and chairman of the evening, thanked the role of Gwynedd Council to ensure the local agreement with the Association. He added:

“The agreement cements a very important financial source and ensures the principle that the Eisteddfod can travel around Wales. We’re extremely greatful to Gwynedd Council for their support to the Urdd.”
