BRYN TERFEL URDD GOBAITH CYMRU
SCHOLARSHIP WINNER
The winner of the 2009 Bryn Terfel Urdd Gobaith Cymru Scholarship is Catrin Angharad Roberts from Llanbedrgoch, Anglesey. The competition was held at Wales Millennium Centre’s Weston Theatre.
Catrin Angharad Roberts won the solo folk song competition at the Urdd Eisteddfod in Cardiff Bay earlier this year. At the Meirion and District National Eisteddfod this year she won
the Lady Herbert Lewis Award for the over 21s Solo Folk Song. Catrin is a prominent member of Aelwyd yr Ynys and she recently co-founded and conducts a new male voice choir on Anglesey.
Says Catrin:
“I’m so grateful for the wonderful experience this competition has given me. I have enjoyed every minute and there are no words to convey the honour of winning this prize. It’s been a once in a lifetime experience and I’ve made good friends along the way. There is no doubt that this scholarship will take me much further than I could ever have dreamed and if I achieve a fraction of Bryn Terfel’s success then I will be over the moon.”
Aled Siôn, Urdd Gobaith Cymru Director of the Eisteddfod and the Arts says:
‘‘We were thrilled by first class performances at Wales Millennium Centre’s Weston Theatre. It was a great pleasure to have Bryn Terfel’s company, who’s always extremely supportive of the Urdd’s work. Being able to honour another worthy winner this year is a great feeling, especially in the tenth year of this special scholarship’s history. I hope that the £4000 will benefit Catrin to set a firm footing in a professional career in the future.’’
